About 1,000 travelers have been rescued after being stranded for days by snowstorms in a remote area of western China, the official New China News Agency said Saturday.

It said people traveling in about 300 vehicles were stuck on a steep and narrow 22-mile stretch of highway between the Xinjiang provincial capital of Urumqi and the town of Yining near the Soviet border.
