Steffensen Elected Head of Southland Builder Unit

Don Steffensen, executive vice president of the Lusk Co., was elected president of the Building Industry Assn. of Southern California at its recent conference in Rancho Mirage.

Steffensen, who moves up from first vice president as well as president of the BIA-SC’s Orange County Region, succeeds DeVere Anderson of Encino as head of the six-county trade association.

The group named veteran San Bernardino County builder Jim Smirl 1987 Builder of the year.

Mel Wynn of Glenfed Development Corp. was elected first vice president; Roy Humphreys of Shea Homes was elected secretary-treasurer; Ed Layton of Ed Layton Construction Co. was elected vice president/labor relations, and Bob Hubbert of Hubbert Advertising & Public Relations Co., was elected vice president/public relations and membership.

Also: George H. Lightner of Lightner Development Co., vice president/governmental affairs and Eric Shield of First American Title Insurance Co., vice president/councils.

Also honored at the four-day convention, the largest in the organization’s history with 550 in attendance, were Dennis Sundstrom, Memorial Award; Tim Galvin, Specialty Contractors/Suppliers Award of Excellence; Bob Hubbert, Achievement Award; Ed Layton, President’s Award; Jan Sargent, Big Spike Award; Eric Shield, Meritorious Award, and Mike Keston, Past President’s Award.
