Local News in Brief : North County : County Vetoes Alcohol at New Softball Fields

Share

Declaring that “I’m not on an anti-booze crusade,” Supervisor Gaddi H. Vasquez led the Board of Supervisors Tuesday in a unanimous veto of sales of beer and wine near planned softball fields in a north county regional park.

Vasquez said that allowing the sale of alcohol would be incompatible with the “family-oriented” activities at Ralph B. Clark Regional Park, which is operated by the county in the city limits of both Fullerton and Buena Park.

“I’m not on an anti-booze crusade, but there’s an issue here of liability and of law enforcement,” Vasquez said.

He said he was concerned about someone having too much to drink, leaving the park and getting into an auto accident. He also said that a rule allowing consumption of alcohol only near the refreshment stand where it was sold would be difficult to enforce.

County ordinances generally bar the sale and consumption of alcohol in county facilities unless special permission is given. Exceptions are made for the golf clubhouse at Mile Square Park and restaurants in harbors operated by the county.
