The Second Century

Fullerton marked its hundredth year in 1987--recalling a time when town founders recognized George H. Fullerton for his work in bringing the southward-bound Santa Fe railroad through the agricultural community. Fullerton was once a booming farming town with citrus groves, grain, walnut, cabbage, tomato and olive crops. Now accessible by four freeways, the fifth largest city in the county is known as an educational and manufacturing center with a charter-service airport as well as a train station.

Four colleges, a university and about 900 manufacturing concerns operate in the city that is home to California State University at Fullerton, Fullerton College, Pacific Christian College, Western State College of Law and the Southern California College of Optometry. Hughes Aircraft-Ground Systems leads the city’s employment with 15,000 workers, followed by Wells Fargo Guard Services, Cal State, Beckmann Instruments and Beatrice/Hunt Wesson Foods.

Cal State Fullerton--a commuter college with an enrollment of 24,416--expects to open its first on-campus housing in February with clustered apartments for 391 students. The first commercial hotel to be built on a public California university campus is scheduled for construction this summer and the university will get its first sports complex in a unique arrangement among city, university and hotel officials. The $16-million Marriott Hotel will help finance the $6.7-million sports facility, to include a 10,000-seat football and soccer stadium and a 2,000-seat baseball pavilion. It will be built on the northern part of the campus and will be supported in part by profits from the 224-room hotel. Opening for the hotel is scheduled in 1988 and for the sports complex in 1989.
