Egan Hopes USD Can Get Its Act Together Tonight Against Montana

Hank Egan, the University of San Diego men’s basketball coach, walks onto the court every day, hoping it will be the day his group of young players jells into a team.

He has seen glimpses of a team effort in both of the Toreros’ games, but it hasn’t been enough to satisfy him.

“We’re young, really young,” Egan said of his team, which features two freshman starters. “We’re in a position where we are really trying to come together as a basketball team and we haven’t done that yet.”

Tonight, USD (0-2) gets another chance when it meets the University of Montana (3-0) in a nonconference game in the USD Sports Center at 7:30.

Guard Danny Means (15 points per game) is the only starter from last season. The freshman starters are forwards Keith Colvin and John Sayers.

Egan points to his team’s lack of continuity as the biggest stumbling block in its two losses to date. In the season opener, USD rallied from a 13-point deficit to catch Rice before losing in overtime, 97-90.

“Right now, we begin by playing like a bunch of individuals, then we decide to get back into the game after we’re losing,” Egan said. “We have come close in both ballgames.
