Doctors successfully separated newborn Siamese twins joined at the abdomen during a five-hour operation in Acapulco’s General Hospital, the Mexico City newspaper Excelsior reported last week.

Both the birth of the twins, who each weighed about 8 pounds, and the operation took place Wednesday in the resort city of Acapulco, 180 miles southwest of Mexico City, the newspaper said.

The babies were born to Everardo and Clementina Triego, farm workers from the nearby village of Costa Chica.

Drs. Jose Luis Balanzar and Geronimo Colin performed the operation, the second of its kind this year at Acapulco General Hospital.

The twins, who were not yet named, will remain under observation in the hospital’s pediatric ward for the next week, Excelsior said.
