The government warned in a report published Saturday that Mexico City’s traditional, nearby sources of water are being exhausted by the steadily increasing growth of the capital’s population.

Calling for efforts to conserve water throughout the city of 20 million, the report said that latest statistics show the rate of water consumption in Mexico City to be 9,620 gallons per second. The rate increases daily, the report said.

As consumption rates have increased, the report said, water has become increasingly expensive and difficult to supply.
