To Its Fans, Squeeze Is On at Amphitheater
Veteran British sextet Squeeze pumps out an eclectic blend of pub-rockin’ pop that in overall sound, lyrical sharpness and record sales falls somewhere between the Beatles and Elvis Costello. At worst, they’re merely pleasant.
Performing Friday night at the Universal Amphitheatre before a rapturous capacity crowd, the group--currently riding the crest of its first Top 40 U.S. hit, the indefatigably catchy “Hourglass”--spent most of its 90-minute set on the right side of a good thing.
Led by the songwriting, vocal and guitar team of sweet Glenn Tilbrook and dour Chris Difford, the band (with ace drummer Gilson Lavis and keyboard wild man Jools Holland back in tow) kept it tight, bright and precise all night.
Despite the band wasting 10 minutes on a protracted, introduce-the-band bit and an intelligence-insulting audience-participation routine, it’s not often that a show will make you wanna go home and dig out all the group’s records, even the new one. Now, is that love?
