China increased its coal exports by more than 30% in the first 10 months of 1987 over the 1986 period and expects to replace Australia as the main supplier to Asian countries, the official China Daily said.
Coal exports in the first 10 months of 1987 totaled 10.78 million tons, earning China $370 million, the newspaper quoted a foreign trade official as saying. Exports for all of 1986 were 9.81 million tons. Two-thirds of the exports went to Asia; 2.5 million tons went to Western Europe.
Improved rail links and ports in China, and a government move to exempt coal from customs duty this year, helped increase exports, the paper quoted the official as saying.
