Dayton, Ohio’s, first black police chief, criticized by the police union for months, will step down today with a $100,000 incentive payment amid charges that he is the victim of racism. Tyree S. Broomfield, chief since 1983, submitted his resignation Friday. Under an agreement he reached with the city to resign, Broomfield will receive six months’ severance pay, other benefits and $100,000 from unidentified private sources apparently offered to persuade him to quit and not sue to regain his job, the Dayton Daily News and Journal-Herald reported. An alliance of black clergymen alleges that Broomfield was forced out for racial reasons. They promised a statement after the City Commission meeting.
