Haitians braced for today’s scheduled general strike by stocking up on food and water and disappearing into their houses. The strike was called by the Caribbean island nation’s labor unions, endorsed by its four leading candidates for president and supported by the Catholic hierarchy and other groups as an attempt to force the ouster of Lt. Gen. Henri Namphy and his military governing council. The military has been blamed for violence that forced cancellation of Haiti’s first election in 30 years.
