King Hussein returned to Amman on Sunday from Cairo, where he met with Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak on the Persian Gulf War and the disunity plaguing the Middle East Arab states, Jordanian radio said.

The three-hour meeting in Cairo was the second time the two leaders have met in less than three weeks.

In Cairo, Safwat Sharif, Egyptian information minister, described the visit as “part of the regular consultations between the two leaders on the gulf war, the Palestinian question and the joint move in the direction of an international Middle East peace conference.”

Asked if the Hussein has broadened his mediation effort to include Egypt and Syria, in addition to Syria and Iraq, Sharif said, “The two leaders always give priority to realizing Arab detente and solidarity.

At an Arab summit held in Amman in early November, Hussein forged a reconciliation--at least on the surface--between Syrian President Hafez Assad and Iraqi President Saddam Hussein.
