Israeli Stabbed to Death in Gaza Strip

JERUSALEM — An Israeli man was knifed to death Sunday in Palestine Square, the main plaza of the Israeli-occupied Gaza Strip, military sources said. The military immediately imposed a curfew on the impoverished, 25-mile-long territory, and several suspects were seized for questioning in the killing of Shlomo Takal, 45, an employee of the Keter plastics company, the sources said.
The last Israeli killed in the Gaza Strip was a soldier slain in an Oct. 5 gun battle with four suspected guerrillas, who also were killed in the clash. An Israeli farmer was shot May 25 when he arrived in Gaza to pick up Arab laborers.
Some 600,000 Palestinians live in the densely populated Gaza Strip, which Israel seized from Egypt in the 1967 Arab-Israeli War. About 2,500 Jewish settlers also live in the coastal area, which is cut off from Israel by barbed wire and military checkpoints.
