U.N. Secretary General Javier Perez de Cuellar said that more than 5 million Ethiopians will be at risk in 1988 due to another severe drought in the East African nation. He asked for increased international aid, saying that food aid requirements for next year are estimated at more than 1 million tons. Emergency assistance is also needed in the areas of logistics, health care, availability of drinking water and sanitation, he said. Perez de Cuellar also said he is beefing up the U.N.’s emergency relief staff in Ethiopia. Two years ago, drought conditions threatened about 8 million Ethiopians.
