Three California Highway Patrol officers assigned to Los Angeles County were among 14 state employees presented with Medal of Valor awards Tuesday by Gov. George Deukmejian for acts of heroism.

The 14 employees protected or saved the lives of accident victims, fellow workers and others under circumstances that jeopardized their own lives, according to statements made by their bosses during ceremonies in the governor’s council room in Sacramento.

CHP Officers Adam Christin and Guillermo Godinez of Torrance were honored for rescuing a man trapped inside a pickup truck that had caught fire after crashing into a barrier on the San Diego Freeway. The truck exploded in flames shortly after they dragged him from the cab.
