Fierce fighting has caused very heavy casualties and food shortages in the southeastern Afghan city of Khost, where Soviet commandos and air attacks have been unable to break a siege of Muslim rebels, Western diplomats said. One diplomat quoted a senior Afghan medical official as saying that “more casualties were being brought into Kabul (from Khost and Kandahar) than at any time during the war,” with 120 admitted to one hospital alone in the capital.
