The first Soviet biography of dictator Josef Stalin since his death in 1953 is scheduled for completion next year, the weekly Literary Gazette said Wednesday.

An essay on “the phenomenon of Stalin” discussed what it called the glaring contradictions in Stalin’s character and the need to probe “the unfinished past” with a thorough study of the man who held power in the Soviet Union for 29 years.

The essay was written by Col. Gen. Dmitri A. Volkogonov, deputy chief of the Political Directorate of the Soviet military and a member of the editorial board of the periodical Znamya. He is expected to finish the biography next year, but the newspaper did not say when it would be published.
