Local News in Brief : Head of Aging Dept. Quits
Dennis Jackson, the head of the city’s Department of Aging for nearly two years, resigned Thursday for “personal reasons,” Mayor Tom Bradley announced.
Jackson’s departure from the $56,524-a-year job marks the fourth Los Angeles department chief to leave in less than a month. Sylvia Cunliffe of General Services and Fred Croton of Cultural Affairs agreed to leave after attempts by Bradley to fire them. Donald Howery, longtime head of the Department of Transportation, recently announced that he will retire Dec. 22.
Jackson, 55, was unavailable for comment Thursday, but officials in the mayor’s office said his resignation was not linked to any dispute within the administration.
Jackson was named by Bradley to head the Department of Aging in February, 1986. The agency coordinates the city’s senior citizens’ activities with state and federal grants and offers such services as hot meals, legal aid and job training.
