Local News in Brief : 2 Developers, Caltrans to Landscape Freeway

In the first partnership of its kind in the Santa Clarita Valley, two local developers and Caltrans announced Thursday that they have joined forces to landscape a one-mile section of the Golden State Freeway in Valencia.

The Valencia Co., which is the development arm of Newhall Land & Farming Co., and Dale Poe Development each contributed $62,500 toward the $250,000 landscaping project, said Jerry Baxter, California Department of Transportation interim district director, at a ceremony marking the beginning of the project.

Caltrans is providing the remaining $125,000 for the landscaping on both sides of the freeway between McBean Parkway and Valencia Boulevard.

Baxter said this kind of public-private partnership is necessary if the state’s freeways are to receive any landscaping.

The freeway landscaping partnership, the first not implemented through a city or a county, is called the Santa Clarita Valley Improvement Assn. The developers and Caltrans were brought together by state Sen. Ed Davis (R-Valencia), who helped plant the ceremonial first tree Thursday.

The landscaping is to be completed in February.
