Local News in Brief : Gardena Opposes Pipeline

Share

The Gardena City Council adopted a resolution Tuesday opposing the construction of the Angeles Pipeline through the city. The resolution blocks the issuance of a local pipeline franchise or construction permit.

The proposed pipeline would transport 300,000 gallons of crude oil a day from Kern County through the Los Angeles area, including the South Bay cities of Inglewood, Hawthorne, Gardena, Carson, Lawndale and El Segundo.

In recommending the resolution, City Manager Ken Landau said several issues remain unresolved, including possible ignition hazards, the city’s limited emergency response capability in case of a major spill, and the potential negative impact on traffic, Gardena residents and area business.

The council instructed City Atty. Michael Karger to consider filing a court brief in support of other cities’ suits.
