Nine jets of the Italian air force’s national aerobatic team flew in formation over St. Peter’s Basilica on Thursday as Pope John Paul II applauded from the window of his apartments in the Vatican’s apostolic palace.

The jets of the “Three-Colored Arrow” squad flew low above Rome’s Via della Conciliazione, a wide street leading from the Tiber River to the Vatican.
