W. German Named NATO Chief

BRUSSELS —
NATO appointed West German Defense Minister Manfred Woerner today to be its new secretary-general to succeed Britain’s Lord Carrington when he steps down on July 1. NATO foreign ministers announced the appointment of Woerner, 53, after a one-day session at NATO headquarters here. Woerner will be the first West German to hold NATO’s most senior political post.
