Dr. Robert D. Shushan, executive director of the Exceptional Children’s Foundation and a resident of Sherman Oaks, was presented the 1987 Executive Excellence Award in Washington D.C. by the National Conference of Executive Directors of the Associations for Retarded Citizens. Shushan was honored for professional excellence during his 28 years as director of the foundation. The award was presented during an awards luncheon in October. Shushan has a doctorate in education from UCLA.

The Visiting Nurse Assn. of Los Angeles is looking for volunteers for its “Hospice in the Home” program to work with patients and families or provide clerical support in the office. Volunteers can offer emotional support and help with errands and transportation. Volunteers are given training and are assigned to work in their own community. Clyde Porter, president of the P.L. Porter Co. in Woodland Hills, was named the first recipient of the Woodland Hills Chamber of Commerce’s “Lulu Bredlow Award” at a special award luncheon. The award recognizes citizens who work to build and maintain a strong community. Porter’s achievements include developing a model child-care facility with the Warner Center Assn., donating time and money to the success of the “Concerts in the Park” series and providing a $50,000 interest-free loan for scholarships through the Warner Center Assn. Lulu Bredlow was Honorary Mayor of Woodland Hills. He participated in at least 36 civic organizations, including the Woodland Hills Chamber of Commerce.

The Civil Air Patrol Valley Senior Squadron 195, headquartered at Van Nuys Air National Guard Base, will hold its annual Christmas banquet Friday for members and guests. The guest of honor for the evening will be Lt. Col Fred Arens, commander of Group I, California Wing, of the Civil Air Patrol. The banquet will be held at California State University, Northridge, in the University Club, 18111 Nordhoff St. and will begin at 7 p.m. The Civil Air Patrol is an auxiliary of the U.S. Air Force and is active in search and rescue missions for downed aircraft and pilots.
