The Rainbow Warrior, the vessel sunk by French secret agents to counter anti-nuclear protests by Greenpeace, was scuttled off New Zealand’s Cavalli Islands in a ceremony that commemorated the life of Fernando Pereira, a Portuguese-born photographer who died when the ship was sunk in Auckland Harbor in 1985. Two French frogmen were convicted of manslaughter in Pereira’s death, and the 400-ton vessel was later refloated but found to be damaged beyond repair by the bombs that sank it. Six of the ship’s original 11 crew members witnessed the scuttling. Rainbow Warrior was escorted on its final journey by the Greenpeace, the flagship of the environmental organization.
