British Official Falls Ill at Yule Service
Lord William Whitelaw, British deputy prime minister, was hospitalized on Monday after he collapsed at Parliament’s traditional Christmas carol service.
Witnesses said Whitelaw, 69, leader of the House of Lords, had finished a reading at the service in St. Margaret’s Church near Parliament when his legs appeared to give out and he slumped in his pew.
An ambulance took him to nearby Westminster hospital, where a spokeswoman said he was in stable condition.
Whitelaw was home secretary (interior minister) from 1979 to 1983 and Northern Ireland minister from 1972 to 1973.
