The hunters who stumbled over it called White Cloud, Mich., police with a frantic report. The hunters had found a badly decomposed body on federal land. “They wanted us out there right away,” said Newaygo County Sheriff Ron Vos. However, what officers and a medical examiner found instead was a fiberglass cast of a body. The sculpture was eventually traced to Grand Rapids artist Tom Czarnopys, who made the figure two years ago and left it lying on national forest land just south of here. The sculpture had been dragged about 300 yards from where Czarnopys placed it, apparently by another deer hunter.
