Local News in Brief : Ferndell Restoration

Share

Three years after a community group secured $500,000 in state money to restore Ferndell, a well-loved but deteriorating section of Griffith Park, a contract for the work has finally been awarded.

The city Recreation and Parks Department awarded a $389,999 contract to Hacienda Landscape Inc. of Los Angeles to restore the benches, bridges and walkways in Ferndell, said Shelden Jensen, Assistant General Manager of the Recreation and Parks Department. The remainder of the state grant will go to architects’ and contingency fees.

The city will contribute $150,000 to restore the extensive irrigation system, needed to provide a moist climate for ferns in the small canyon that borders Ferndell Avenue at the entrance to the park just north of Los Feliz Boulevard.

The Friends of Ferndell, a group of residents who live nearby, lobbied city, county and state officials in 1984 for funds to rehabilitate the park. As a result of their efforts, a state bond fund approved by voters that year contained $500,000 for work on the dell. But an initial design had to be scaled down after all bids on it proved too costly.
