National City-based Western Lumber Co., which operates 11 retail and wholesale building supply stores in Southern California, has been sold to Georgetown Industries, a Charlotte, N.C.-based company that is primarily owned by the Kuwaiti government. Georgetown paid about $40 million for Western, according to company spokesmen. The government of Kuwait owns more than 90% of Georgetown, according to Georgetown President Roger Regelbrugge. In 1985, Boise Cascade spun off Western Lumber to a group of Boise executives and McCown DeLeeuw & Co., a venture capital firm.
