Duarte : Museum Finds a Home

Share

After years of interim arrangements, the Duarte Historical Society has finally found a permanent home for its museum.

The City Council has voted to let the society move a house, donated by the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, to the future Encanto Park on Encanto Parkway at the eastern edge of the city. The house stands on property at Royal Oaks Drive and Cotter Street where the church plans to build a new facility.

The Historical Society displayed its 1,500 items, including a piano and an altar, in the city’s former Parks and Recreation Department building on Buena Vista Avenue until that building was torn down in 1985. The society searched unsuccessfully for free space and last year rented quarters on Huntington Drive, using income from a $150,000 trust fund.

The church offered the house with the stipulation that it be moved by next month. The Historical Society will pay about $20,000 to move it.
