A man who bit off more than he could chew when he stole police car flashing lights to decorate his bedroom was sentenced Friday to six months in jail and ordered to wash the township’s police cars.

Billy R. Collins Jr., 22, removed the blue flashers from two Colerain Township police cars in June, 1986, officers said. Collins did not have tools so he reportedly chewed off the lights’ electrical wires. His landlord spotted the lights in his bedroom and called police.

Hamilton County Common Pleas Judge Richard Niehaus sentenced Collins to six months but indicated he would release him in a couple of months. Niehaus also ordered Collins to wash Colerain Township’s police cars once a week for two months after he is released.
