INNOCENTS ABROAD: How did Thelonious Monster, Los Angeles’ most beloved rock goofballs, go over on their current U.S. tour? The Washington Post recently reviewed the group’s local club date, dubbing the Monsters “a big, amiable sheep dog of a band” and describing its set as “hilariously shambling.”

It doesn’t sound as if the band has spent any of its tour off-days rehearsing. The review noted that “from its opening cover of BTO’s ‘Taking Care of Business,’ the Monsters’ show wobbled like a house of cards in a weak breeze: The clownish Bob Forrest hurled invective at the drummer, wandered offstage and urged audience members to take the mike.”

Forrest still got off the best line of the night. Noting that the band’s show followed the debut of a new video by Skinny Puppy, Forrest slyly apologized to fans at the end of the set, saying: “We’re sorry we interrupted Skinny Puppy, lame as they are.”
