Polish riot police broke up a pro-Solidarity demonstration that followed a church service in the northern seaport of Gdynia, detaining 20 protesters. About 2,000 people attended the Mass to mark the anniversary of the 1970 riots against food price boosts in which more than 50 people died, according to official figures. After the service, leaders of the outlawed trade union Solidarity--banned after the imposition of martial law in 1981--led about 500 protesters for about 100 yards with banners reading “Solidarity Will Win” before the riot police intervened.
