Ford Aerospace & Communications Corp. is trimming its name.

Beginning Jan. 1, the aerospace and defense contractor’s official name will be Ford Aerospace Corp.

“We just realized it was an awful unwieldy name,” said Mark S. Miller, a company spokesman. “Communications isn’t something that has to be spelled out anymore.

“Besides,” he added, “most people already called it Ford Aerospace.”

Ford Aerospace, a subsidiary of Ford Motor Co., is moving its corporate headquarters from Detroit to dual offices in Newport Beach and Washington in 1988. The company’s Aeroneutronic group is based in Newport Beach.

Ford Aerospace traces its roots back to 1928, when the Philco company was founded. Ford Motor acquired Philco in 1961. It bought what is now the Aeroneutronic group in 1956. The Philco and Aeroneutronic units became part of the Ford Aerospace & Communications subsidiary in 1976.

Ford Aerospace’s operations include satellites; command, control and communication equipment; tactical weapons systems, and space operations and engineering services.
