When we heard that “Broadcast News” had bumped Arnold Schwarzenegger from last week’s Newsweek cover because editors were turned off by “Running Man” and what they perceived as its Cro-Magnon audience, we had to check it out. Tom Mathews, senior arts editor, swears the two were never head-to-head: “ ‘Broadcast News’ is just one of the best pictures around--it never had any serious competition.”

Mathews said that Arnold and Tri-Star’s futuristic action-adventure were among cover candidates in November. But: “He just didn’t come out with the gold prize. I think ‘Running Man’ was unusual and Schwarzenegger has developed in such an interesting way. But in the end, we decided he just isn’t ready for a cover.”

He did get the consolation prize--an inside spot.
