A Royal Air Force plane set a record on an 8,000-mile dash to the Falkland Islands on Friday when it flew a team of doctors to treat a seriously ill soldier stationed in the south Atlantic British colony.

The Lockheed Tristar-1011 left London on Thursday night and completed the journey in 15 hours and 50 minutes with a refueling stopover at Ascension Island, a Defense Ministry spokesman said.

It was the fastest such one-stop flight by an RAF aircraft, he said.
