A West German climber was robbed and fatally shot in the Andes by two masked men, Peruvian police said, but his climbing partner escaped unharmed. The shooting occurred last Wednesday near 22,205-foot Mt. Huascaran, the highest peak in Peru. A police officer in nearby Huaraz City quoted Finn Stoll, 20, as saying the attackers had followed Jon Philip Knops, 20, and him before they stopped to camp. The region is known for guerrilla activity, but police said the case appears to be a common assault. Stoll said the attackers took $65 from Knops’ pocket.
