Storms that left the South awash in floodwaters, the Midwest buried under two feet of snow and claimed at least 49 lives swept into the Northeast today, snarling rush-hour traffic and delaying air travel in New York and Boston.

In New York City, morning commuters slipped and slid on a light powdering of snow that stuck to the streets before shovelers were able to clear the sidewalks. Rush hour traffic was a nightmare across the New York area. Getting to work in Boston, where four inches of snow fell in the morning, also was a major headache.
