- Summerfest ’87 was a resounding box office success, and the La Jolla Chamber Music Society, the festival’s sponsor, is enjoying an additional accolade. Last week, the International Society of Performing Arts Administrators in New York City gave a first-place award to the graphic design package used to promote Summerfest ’87.

According to the society’s spokeswoman, Helen Erewan, the La Jollans were in good company, sharing this annual award with Washington’s Kennedy Center for the Arts and with the Indiana University Auditorium concert series.

- The award for this year’s most original Christmas card goes to David Ward-Steinman, San Diego State University’s resident composer, who sent out a 10-page full orchestral score. Aptly titled “Season’s Greetings,” Ward-Steinman arranged the festive two-minute overture from his 1981 Christmas cantata, “In These Times.”

- Pacific Chamber Opera has sent out a call to area artists to submit their favorite chocolate recipes to be included in a promotional cookbook published by the opera company.

The chocolate theme is appropriate, since the company’s 1988 season, which opens next month, will include a production of “The Chocolate Soldier,” a popular operetta by Oscar Straus. Interested artists should contact PCO’s Christeene Lindsay.
