Robert W. McFarland, Sculptor and AIDS Victim

Robert W. McFarland, 56, a sculptor who friends said was one of the world’s longest-living patients afflicted with AIDS. McFarland survived more than five years after it was confirmed he had the virus and seven years after he first developed symptoms. In a 1986 interview, McFarland said that he believed his longevity was due to huge doses of vitamins and a diet of whole grains, vegetables and raw garlic.
