Atty. Gen. Edwin Meese III is in command at the Justice Department and has no intention of resigning despite investigations of his role in the Iran-Contra affair and the Wedtech controversy, a senior Meese aide said. William Bradford Reynolds, assistant attorney general for civil rights, told reporters at a Washington breakfast meeting that Meese has been “very much at the helm during what may well be one of the department’s most active and productive years.” He blamed the news media for raising the idea that Meese might resign.
