China’s gross national product will exceed $270 billion this year, up 9% from 1986, the official Xinhua News Agency said. Zheng Jiaheng, deputy director of the State Statistical Bureau, said in an interview with Xinhua that industrial output increased 14.5% while agricultural output was up 4%. China’s GNP--a broad measure of the value of all goods and services produced in the country--is the eighth largest in the world, although the country remains one of the world’s poorest nations because of its population of more than 1 billion people.
