Suspected Communist rebels shot and killed a pro-administration candidate in a growing wave of violence before regional elections in the Philippines, according to military and police reports. Lt. Col. Resurrecion Miravite said four gunmen, whom he identified as Communist guerrillas, shot Jose Geromo during a political rally on Mindanao Island. The four escaped, Miravite said. Geromo, 49, was the Aquino administration’s candidate for mayor of Molave, located in Mindanao’s Zamboanga del Sur province, about 490 miles south of Manila.”
