Leaning Tower of Pisa Leans More Slowly
The Leaning Tower of Pisa leaned more slowly in 1987 than in 1986, inclining a further 0.7 millimeters during the year, its chief custodian said Thursday.
After the traditional annual measurement by Pisa University, custodian Giuseppe Toniolo said at the present rate of movement the tower would topple over in about 100 years. Last year it leaned a further 1.26 millimeters.
Officials plan to make soundings in the next few months in an effort to discover what can be done to stop the 187-foot tower from toppling.
The 800-year-old marble bell-tower this year attracted 800,000 visitors.
