The Hawaiian island of Oahu, including the city of Honolulu, was declared a disaster area today, in the wake of New Year’s Eve floods that forced 2,800 people from their homes and caused $29 million in damage. The declaration by Gov. John Waihee will enable victims of the floods, caused by torrential rains which blocked drains with boulders and trees, to apply for federal disaster aid. A spokesman for the Oahu Civil Defense Agency said its latest figures show one house was destroyed by the floods, 53 suffered major damage and 477 were slightly damaged.
