A unarmed man was arrested Tuesday when his attempt to hijack an Aeromexico jetliner to Texas was foiled at a refueling stop in Monterrey, a spokesman for the airline said. None of the other 110 passengers or the eight crew members aboard was injured.

The spokesman for the government-owned airline said the hijacker, identified as Marcos Ganem, commandeered the DC-9 about midnight Monday as it was en route to Mexico City from the northeastern town of Los Mochis. Claiming he had a pistol concealed in his jacket, Ganem entered the plane’s flight cabin and insisted on being flown to Brownsville, Tex.

The plane’s captain, Alberto Rios, persuaded Ganem that a refueling stop would be necessary at Monterrey, about 180 miles southwest of the Texas border town. Rios then managed to alert the control tower at Monterrey, and federal police and military officials were waiting for the plane when it landed.
