72 Troops Killed, Eritrean Rebels Say

NAIROBI, Kenya —
Secessionist Ethiopian rebels fighting for the independence of Eritrea said Tuesday they killed 72 Ethiopian government troops and captured five during clashes in the northern province last week.
The clandestine radio of the Eritrean People’s Liberation Front said the casualties were inflicted between Dec. 30 and Jan. 2 as the guerrillas repulsed an attack by four army brigades.
