New York Smoking Law Signed

NEW YORK — Broad restrictions on smoking in public places in New York City were signed into law today by Mayor Edward I. Koch, who called it “a great day for health.” Businesses have 90 days to meet the new rules or face fines of up to $500.
The law, enacted after seven years of debate, bans or restricts smoking in virtually all public places save smaller restaurants and shops, and requires businesses with more than 15 employees to provide smoke-free work areas.
