Thatcher Hit on S. Africa Stand

Hundreds of South African expatriates denounced British Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher’s opposition to sanctions against Pretoria today, burning a British flag and branding her “Mother Apartheid” as she arrived in Nigeria.

President Gen. Ibrahim Babangida, who has called for tougher sanctions against Pretoria, told Thatcher he hoped Britain would play a leading role in settling the political conflict in South Africa. Thatcher, without mentioning Britain’s refusal to join other Western countries--including the United States--in imposing at least some sanctions, said both Britain and Nigeria wanted an end to apartheid.
