International Business Machines was the most generous corporation in 1986 by a wide margin, according to a fund-raising group that surveyed big businesses on their charitable giving. The Taft Group, a Washington-based publisher of fund-raising materials for nonprofit organizations, said IBM reported giving away $188.4 million in 1986. The other top corporate givers were: Hewlett-Packard Co. and foundation, $65 million; General Motors Corp. and foundation, $61.2 million; Exxon Corp. and foundation, $56.5 million; General Electric Co. and foundations, $36.4 million.
