Mullican Loses Fight With AIDS
In her touching and noble farewell to the AIDS patient whose journey has been the subject of an extraordinary series of articles, Cimons wrote, “Jeffrey David Mullican lost his 20-month struggle against AIDS.”
I rather think he won his struggle, especially considering the way he dealt with family and other relationships, shared his courageous ordeal with the world (via The Times) and maintained his own style of dignity. It is we, as a society that begrudges research funding, resists all-out mobilization and, worst of all, fails to educate and inform fully, who are losing the struggle. It is shameful that as a result, future Jeffrey Mullicans, not those who make the policy, will be the ones to pay for this loss.
